Georgij Semionowitsch Wereiskij is an outstanding figure of Russian and Soviet graphic art. His work represents a culture of line, observation and concentrated portraiture that formed a quiet but highly refined counterposition to the large painterly and ideological gestures of the twentieth century. Wereiskij was a graphic artist, painter, portraitist and landscape draughtsman; his significance lies above all in his ability to make personality, bearing and atmosphere visible with economical, precise means. His educational path did not follow a simple academic art career. He first studied law while also receiving artistic training, including lessons with J. J.
