Evgeny Alexandrovich Tikhmenev was a Russian painter and graphic artist known above all as an animal painter, hunting painter and interpreter of military-battle themes. Born in 1869 in Sumy into an old noble family, his visual world was shaped by a milieu in which hunting, the military, riding, dogs and aristocratic life played a central role. His later artistic specialisation in hunting scenes was therefore not merely a choice of subject, but the expression of a social and cultural environment. Tikhmenev studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts in the 1890s, among others under the battle painter Bogdan Willewalde. This training is decisive for his classification: it connects him with the academic tradition of horse, military and event painting. At the same time, Tikhmenev transferred this heritage onto a more intimate and motif-specific level, especially in the depiction of hunting dogs, riders, game, movement and landscape setting. His art stands at the intersection of animal observation, aristocratic leisure culture and a military pictorial tradition. For today's viewers, it offers insight into a world that largely disappeared through the Revolution and the social transformations of the twentieth century.
